Doing It Right | Sly Like A Fox

SLYCZACH82

Many of us don’t see Sylvester Stallone as the sartorial heavyweight. This pint sized style contender was truly the personification of his most memorable role, an underdog at best in the style arena. And like any underdog, that entails a few big hits but a whole lotta’ misses.

However we find ourselves a tad more forgiving when it comes to Sly, as he was a man that was known to have fun with style – Even if it meant looking like the manager of your local Gold’s Gym in the 80’s at times.

Taken from Life Archives we bring you one of Sly’s TKO’s. Playing the role of the socialite leading man, we see him in a tan double-breasted peak lapel jacket, donning a collar pin, cap toe oxfords and a patterned silk pocket square. While we may not endorse the pinky ring and prop pipe, we appreciate the effort.

So keep on sluggin’, tighten that collar pin and strut on. Do it right. (more…)

TGT for DRIVEN | The Reins in Spain

TGTASC

While we took some time off  in the Costa del Sol, TGT was invited to the most exclusive private racing track in Europe – the Ascari Race Resort. There we spent a day with up-and-coming Spanish race car sensation Alvaro Fontes to familiarize ourselves with a behemoth track made up of the racing world’s celebrated twists and turns. We would then experience the track first hand, behind the wheel of the fastest car to ever round the track Nurburgring Nordschleife. For more on the octane infused day, head on over to UrbanDaddy’s DRIVEN.

TGT on Foot | Veuve Cliquot Polo Classic 2011

IMG_4328

The Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic was in full swing Sunday on Governor’s Island. As the influx of people created a sprawling line spilling onto the streets of the FDR highway, thousands of New Yorkers gathered for the highly anticipated event. Greeting the attendees was snap happy Bill Cunningham at the entrance of the Battery Maritime Building documenting the peacockers, the dandies, the curious and the avid equestrian aficionado. Fortunately we knew exactly who we were – the equestrian enthusiast.

Opening the event was none other than the gent from the land down under, Mr. Hugh Jackman as Master of Ceremonies. After a few words by himself and the US VSP President, a stellar match between Black Watch and Team Veuve Cliquot was underway. Argentinean Polo star and face of Ralph Lauren, Señor Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras was present as team Capitan and all around ladies man barreling down the field with fancy-mallet-work atop his polo pony. Ladies swooned and the bubbly flowed freely. At half time the field was flooded with spectators to stamp down the hooved divots and grass caps.  After a feuded match, the Black Watch polo team took the gold with a 6-5 victory.

Overall, the range of attire was diverse  stretching from Figueras-Polo-Ad inspired style and period Gatsbyesque flare. Waist coats, saddle shoes, brogues and club collars dotted the style scene in what proved to be eclectic flore and fauna for the advanced people watcher. As for ourselves, we grew nostalgic of our horse mounted days at the Haras La Alhambra horse breeding facility and the South American equestrian culture. Granted, our experience is with Arabian and Andalusian horses, but we drew appreciation from all of our quadriped companions regardless of blood lines on Sunday. As such, we end with the appreciation of the nimble polo pony and the skilled horseman, Ignacio Figueras and his natural sense of horsemanship. More photos to follow.

Tumblr | Back In The Badlands

Yesterday, we launched the sister site/tumblr-sibling of The Gentleman’s Topcoat. If you haven’t noticed, half of the driving force behind TGT, is not only the style agenda of the gentleman, but the visuals associated with them. Back in the Badlands, is just that – a visual celebration of the places, things, items and moments we admittedly hope to experience. It translates into our unabashed attempt to influence our daily lives with these visuals. It is a conscious reminder, that we need not lead a life marked by monotony and bland overtones. Suit up, and step outside – We are Back in the Badlands.

Swagger À La Nicholson

Only Jack Nicholson can command these kind of reactions from the ladies. In their defense they were trying out for his production Drive, She Said (1970); but we cant help but love the confidence he carries with the distressed old Levi’s trucker jacket and skullcap. Noteworthy observations – his “Elect Nicholson” sticker on his briefcase and his pre-Cuckoo’s Nest skullcap. We guess he was rocking the McMurphy look long before bringing the rowdy character to life.

From The Desk Of | Winston Churchill

The contents of every man’s desk does a great telling about the character and disposition of the proprietor. No less true does that statement hold for great statesmen and public figures favorably recognized by history. As such, we bring you the desk of the British Bulldog. From Chartwell, his Kent home, this is the desk of Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill.

Doing It Right | Fisticuffs

Jack Dempsey didn’t believe in magic, and neither should you  –  Tonight, come out swinging.  Literalism’s aside, you know what I mean.  Make it happen, and dress the part.

Everyday Carry | TGT’s Personal Effects

Let’s be honest, we love things here at TGT. In light of that truth, let us not forget that there are many things we don’t need. However, there are the belongings every man needs, or believes he does and thus will never leave his home without. That was the concept behind Everyday Carry – a tumblr style site of the items we fill our pockets with, strap to our wrists and push up to the bridge of our nose.  Anyone can submit a picture of their collection of man regalia, to share with others. Granted, every now and then there is a collection of items that resemble the equipment of a conspiracy theorist on the eve of Y2K. However, use your own discretion to decide what is to be taken seriously and what not – at least in terms of everyday carry.

As for myself, these are the list of things I carry on a regular basis. Living in New York, I do still carry a pocket knife, but demoted myself to a Leatherman for obvious reasons. Back when I studied in North Carolina, I even then got a lot of flack for carrying a pocket knife. Today, the Leatherman sits in my bag. Anyways, now that the disclaimer is out of the way – we take inventory:
